--------------------------------------------------------------- English: Withnail & I is a story that feels strangely unique. I love those films where you don’t just watch the characters, but live with them. Everything feels ordinary and, at the same time, oddly comforting to behold, even if the situations or the people are stressful. You can almost feel yourself inside that filthy apartment, like an adult lost in their 20s or 30s, like an unemployed actor in the late 60s, drowning in existential crises for not being able to do what you love. It all feels so ordinary and miserable, yet inhabited by characters who, though dysfunctional, are deeply endearing. Richard E. Grant perfectly embodies Withnail: an eccentric alcoholic, lost in substances and consumed by the apparent misfortunes of a life he denied himself. He’s eloquent, but in his discontent, he drags everyone into his “ruin.” In his chaotic madness, full of personality, he creates moments that are both hilarious and suffocating. Withnail envies other people’s success and craves being the center of attention, which makes him as selfish as he is fascinating to watch. Marwood, on the other hand, looks for possibilities and ways to change his life. He’s anxiously kind, yet unfortunately dragged down by his best friend. He’s the only character we actually see think, and I love that. His performance is spot-on, making him the perfect counterbalance to Withnail. Watching these two live together and tolerate each other is something very particular: they seem destined to need one another. The ending is a little sad, and even more when you consider the original version, which would’ve been far crueler and devastating. Thankfully, they didn’t go with that and didn’t let it end with him taking his own life. This film has a strange sense of humor. On my first watch, I laughed a lot, but this time it was different: knowing everything, I ended up admiring the soundtrack even more. It’s a wonder. The Withnail theme that plays over the credits feels like pure magic, a kind of fantasy that captivates me and fills me with nostalgia for everything I lived with them. It leaves me with a “chin-chin” echoing in every corner of my memory. Beyond its dark humor, the true magic lies in the chemistry between the characters: complex, dissonant, yet bound by undertones of genuine love. In the end, it’s a strange, funny, and quotable British dark comedy, filled with unforgettable characters who stay with you long after the last drink… a drink that only remained in Withnail’s lost mind. Great films, not that popular, but worth it. (https://boxd.it/SLdbW)
