Diary Entry forAmistad
What is their story? We cannot tell. We can only imagine. We can only, at best, listen to their voices and, in so doing, find our own. I had to watch this for an Afro-Colombian studies class on the slave trade. I liked it, above all the ending speech of John Quincy Adams, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. I’ll write about it later. Spielberg Run: 16/34 Atp I’m convinced Spielberg drops a masterpiece and then immediately follows it up with 2-3 mid films. The movie had so much potential. The story itself is strong and important, but the film feels uneven at times. Some parts hit really hard especially some courtroom moments while others drag too much and feel boring. Though some scenes are powerful for eg when Joseph was telling his story on the ship… omg that was terrifying. Djimon Hounsou is incredible here. His performance feels raw and emotional. You can feel every bit of his pain and anger. The film definitely has its moments, but they’re rare. Also, the runtime feels too long. Overall, it’s not as gripping as it should’ve been. I feel like Spielberg didn’t do a great job here. The film had potential, but he made it mid. One star only for Djimon.

Talk about a movie that should be shown in every high school history class. I thought it was great. Compelling legal narrative supported by some great performances. It was a little long, but I thought it was great. Alright alright alright. 8.4
