Saving Private Ryan

Hadn't ever planned to revisit this one. I played snipers-only/rifles-only matches in gaming almost exclusively for a while thanks to this picture. Not quite the correct takeaway to have, but we're all dipshits at that age. Action does still hold up, though.

Saving Private Ryan

The way this film shows humanity in times of war is amazing. The dog tags scene, the doubt yet perseverance to save Ryan, mourning a fellow brother, the scene with Wade, the calm before a storm in the last leg of the movie, Miller being a school teacher, Upham on the stairs but then shooting the soldier that killed Jackson and Mellish yet letting the others go? The humanity in these soldiers are very beautifully written into the horrors of the war.  Fuuuucking hell with the way Ryan describes the last thing he and his brothers got together and trying to remember their faces while Edith Piaf's "Tu Es Partout" is playing in the background and knowing the context of the song? Alongside the rest of the soldiers remembering their life before the war? This shit just punched me right in the face. It is so beautifully written, I actually teared up. And the scene with Wade and the dog tags? I think soldiers have a sense of defense mechanism and this was an example too. Wade interrupting them from being so outspoken while other soldiers were walking by? It is one of my favorite scenes too.  Also, it's funny before they got ambushed by the Germans that I kept thinking that hopefully all of them will live but then I just bite myself in the ass because this is a war story and I like action and thriller films. 😭 I'm never letting myself learn.
