Identity

A Cunning Killer or an Evil Curse? For a long time after watching, I couldn’t decide on a rating because the film left me with rather mixed feelings. On the one hand, it masterfully misleads the viewer, keeping the mystery of the murders unresolved until the very end. On the other hand, the screenwriters seem to disregard all that buildup by delivering a finale that devalues the emotional investment in the characters. Sure, making the killer someone with dissociative identity disorder was an unusual choice, but it didn’t feel like the most satisfying resolution. That said, Ray Liotta and John Cusack’s performances alone make it worth watching. Both bring intensity to their roles, adding weight to the film’s psychological tension. I also wish Alfred Molina had more screen time. Visually, the film maintains a dark, claustrophobic atmosphere that keeps the suspense high. However, knowing the twist in advance robs the film of much of its impact, making it a one-time experience rather than a story worth revisiting.

A good cast doing some fun performances elevate an otherwise not good movie. That twist sucks, and is telegraphed from the get go. Maybe I’ll wait another 19 years to watch it again.

We know you killed the convict, we know you did something weird with the actress, and we know…..and we know this is your baseball bat!
