The Wrestler

Damn, Roarke really is perfect in this. I don't know if I want to check back in with the other Aronofsky films ever again, but I am glad we're seeing this one more time back-to-back with its Black Swan combo piece.

The Wrestler

The Wrestler

98/100 Check out my highest rated films - boxd.it/oBwAc (https://boxd.it/oBwAc) “For me, the action is the juice.” ~ Michael Cherrito, Heat This is essentially what it is for the Ram. This film follows Mickey Rourke as Randy the Ram, a professional has been wrestler who still performs but really is just riding on the coattails of his prime in the 80s. He was deep into the sport and enjoyed his life as well as he could resulting in him abandoning the only family he’s got - his daughter. Why this film works is because it’s a story about a failed redemption, it’s not motivational, it’s straight up depressing. Sometimes, one life just isn’t enough to change a man. Like we see in the film, Randy is a great human being. He’s nice with his peers, great with fans, great with people lesser than him in other ways. He’s just a lovely personality to be around. People don’t know about his personal life because he ignores his personal life. Randy is essentially distant from all the emotions that make a man a man. He works, gets himself beat up, wins and gets his gratification from that but has nothing to look forward to. The heart attack like in any other traditional motivational film is his wake up call. He acts on it, stops wrestling, finds a regular job where he’s good at too, tries to reconnect with his daughter and find love with the one person he shares things with in Marisa Tomei’s Pam. But as Randy always does, he fucks things up. I know I’m essentially summarising the plot but this is really his journey and I don’t have much to add to it. There is fundamentally nothing wrong with this film. Mickey, Marisa and Evan are all excellent, the score while subtle is fitting, the direction is grounded and makes this feel like a documentary and the story is raw and heartbreaking. Randy is a man like many who are good at their job but for some reason cannot maintain a life outside it; no matter how much they try, life picks em up and throws em back into the grind. This is man made up of bad decisions and ultimately, he reaches a point where he just can’t turn back the tide and he gives it his one last go at the only thing that ironically, doesn’t hurt him. Like Randy says “The only place I get hurt is out there.” referring to the world that he has forsaken and in turn has just about forsaken him. I’m just finding it difficult to write any more because it is essentially a perfect viewing experience.
