Only Yesterday
God yes, after yesterday's corporate IP rigmarole we get back to animation art that believes in itself. My skin is clear, my grades are up, my crops are flourishing, however else the old meme goes. The sinuses are freed up, that's for sure, Fridays are for bawling. Portrayed here are a select few tributaries of a young girl's life that feed into the woman she becomes, and with it the potential of ever larger streams those are destined to join. There's consideration of the agrarian ideal and its viability, shades of a tenuous utopia, but I'm thinking what matters most is its relationship to the character, and I think she knows it's not necessarily the end or fulfilment of her story. The horizon just stretches that much further in response.
Only Yesterday
This is me with my inner child. I love the movie so much, the visual so aesthetic, the story is not heavy and warming my heart like i get comfortable by watching it and also relate to everyone. To my inner child, i really want to meet you, hug you and let's realise all your dream. But from now i just want to be like in this movie, slow living in a village must be so good!
Only Yesterday
Studio Ghibli’s true hidden gem. A perfect film about nostalgia and struggling with personal identity. Two things any twenty something year olds can relate to. 💖
Only Yesterday
Lush animation, great soundtrack and vignettes of childhood that (mostly) feel all too familiar
