Ju-on: The Grudge

Ju-on: The Grudge is widely known to be one of the most terrifying films in Japanese cinema, and it rightfully deserves that place. Having two prior films really set up the premise of the spirits featured in this, The Grudge goes from TV film to full-length feature, and man, is it glorious. Oozing with thick atmosphere, we get some of the scariest scenes in any horror film, with some of the most memorable characters as well. This film does feel like it is the culmination of the two previous films, and actually has room to grow and show what they can do with the story. I’m surprised that I disliked this film when I first watched it, thinking that it was “boring” (mind you, this was years ago whenever I was just getting into films, let alone foreign films). I’m very glad that I was able to finally rewatch this with a new pair of eyes, as Ju-on: The Grudge truly is a horror masterpiece.

Ju-on: The Grudge

What Ju-on accomplishes is setting a creepy premise with decent scares. Ju-on: The Grudge happens to be the third movie of the series. This idea of a cure has been around for a while, and this is able to bring something fresh to the whole haunted house/curse idea. The Grudge wasn't scary. It was more unsettling, but wasn't truly scary. Maybe it's because I've seen the American version of the film and knew somewhat what was happening, but it still brought on some new things that made it interesting. Sadly, I was bored throughout. I kept checking how far I was into it, only seein that a couple minutes had passed. It felt like an eternity watching it. I wish I had been more interested in it, instead of interested in reading the reviews of it instead. Really, Ju-on: The Grudge is a creepy film, but lacks the pacing and true scares for it to be scary. I'm glad it was my first trip into Japanese horror, since it showed me what it's capable of. I'm really excited to dive deeper into this genre of horror!

Ju-on: The Grudge

Whispering Corridors and Broken Dinner Tables: A Collection of A-Horror (http://boxd.it/XFFo) Ju-on: The Grudge is a far more mystifying installment than its predecessors. It's the third and most well-known of the Ju-on franchise and the first to receive a theatrical release, but by no means is it great, in fact, I was quite disappointed. The scares I'd hope it would attain from the original aren't so much there, and instead shrouded by the film's confusing plot that's rather all too familiar. So much from the original is mimicked here in undesirable fashion. The constant change of characters is frustrating; really, it should have stuck to one. And there's a also a sparse mystery, that would have been better figured about by a protagonist. Sadly, there's hardly one here. I assume the popularity of the film sparked the decision to create an American remake, nonetheless directed by the same director. In every sense it's bleak and chilling to a degree, but for the most part, Ju-on: The Grudge is a slow decent into a run-of-the-mill Japanese horror.
