Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter

Boggy Creek's Best Movies of 2014 (http://boxd.it/f5Uk) The thick, broad snow of Fargo, North Dakota - try trudging through that. The Zellner Brothers's, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, involves a Japanese girl in a blanket of a red coat as she marches boots from Tokyo to Minnesota, in search of a buried breifcase. That buried breifcase is the Coen Brother's 1996, Fargo 'briefcase', stashed with a shit load of cash. In Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, it's an intriguing adventure seeing this girl's flailing journey. Respect this: it has a proper character-driven motive. Feeling for this purposley isolated woman is exciting. Actress, Rinko Kikuchi is awkward and quiet. Kumiko is awkward and quiet. Wow, there's a performance. We admire her 'balls'. The few characters she bumps into are funny and unique - a notable attribute to the film. It's a boot in the face of awe during the extraordinary yet simple cinematography. Follow her from the back; zoom in from far away; keep it still. Minnesota's scene is a vast stretch of gorgeousness perfected in front of the camera and red riding hood Kumiko, is a cemented stature in the shot. Accelerate the tension with experimental band, The Octopus Project, and the shot is complete. The score is an array of concentration ready to explode. If the streets of Tokyo hold the known for Kumiko then the winter wasteland of Fargo hold the unknown. It's the intriguing authority of her journey that will rattle and advocate audiences. GRADE:A-

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter

Very beautiful film aesthetically. Rinko Kikuchi did a great job with her character, and the themes touched in the movie are some that really resonate with me.  I enjoyed the premise and the vibe of the film, although I think it was missing something narrative-wise, it felt lacking in that aspect and that’s why I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would.  Overall a pretty, enjoyable film that could have been a little more, but I still like it for what it is.
