Obviously it’s flawed, but it’s really cool to see this kind of long epic story, usually reserved for much more “prestigious” fare, made as a pulp dime store book meets street gangster saga. Despite its 3+ hour runtime, it feels fleet of foot. It’s a shame Chapa is so streaky in this, he’s fantastic in some scenes, and not so much in others. Given that he’s the center of the film, it’s hard for it to coalesce super well with a shakeup performance at the middle. The Dia de los Muertos sequence is clearly just ripping off Coppola, but it’s still pretty damn great. Really enjoyed this.
