I think this had a really intense sense of unwavering foreboding atmosphere, for unfortunately less than more parts, but when it did occur it was some of the most uncomfortable I’ve been watching a film, and that leads me to believe that Kurosawa is likely very introspective with his films, like in Cure (1997) as well. He’s able to make the audience feel exactly how he wants them to. This was off to a really excellent start. I think that some of the themes are a bit mediocre, and some scenes become so repetitive that it’s less haunting, but the scene in my backdrop genuinely put some nasty chills down my body.

I think this has got to be one of the worst remakes ever made. When compared side by side within the first 30mins it can be seen how bad the film is going to be.

It's been more than twenty years since I saw it first, and I still think it's the most effective movie on loneliness and alienation. In fact, it's probably among the first works on alienation I watched as a teen (way way before I knew anything about Marxism, Critical Theory, or Cultural Studies), so maybe that's why it's so foundational for me. I don't think this is a horror movie, though it can be scary, especially when it comes to the creepy sound design. It's a very powerful drama that uses unease to shock you into thinking and realization. Very successfully, I think, because it's a movie that never truly leaves you, but it changes the way you see humanity, connection, technology, and media.
