Guy Ritchie's The Covenant
Not as bad as I was expecting, but I’m still glad I didn’t pay to see this in theaters. For the first half ofTHE COVENANT I was locked in. I actually found the narrative around the translator, an otherwise ordinary man, working with the military to be surprisingly compelling. It was still stuffed full of irritating and un-honest western exceptionalism, as most films about the Iraq War are, but the heart of the story was interesting. In addition Gyllenhaal and Salim were great co-leads and really played well off each other. But the Jake’s character gets sent home after barely making it out of the war with his life…and then the movie completely falls apart. I just didn’t care about any of the over done melodrama or the personal stakes for any of the characters outside of Ahmed (who isn’t really in the last act that much). At least I can say that this is the least insufferable Iraq War film I’ve ever watched. When will Jake Gyllenhaal star in another good movie?
