Roman J. Israel, Esq.

While it's not as memorable and concise as Nightcrawler, Dan Gilroy's latest LA based film Roman J. Israel, Esq. is still a highly entertaining legal drama. Washington definitely shines bright here, with a character that is intriguing and brings out Washington's great acting. While the film does slow down a little and doesn't seem to pick up much, it's still an intriguing film and a decent sophomore film for Gilroy.

A bit weird to see Denzel Washington like this after watching Training Day

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

my lack of success is self imposed.. DENZEL ONCE AGAIN KILLED THIS ROLE BRO! if i’m being honest denzel honestly carries this entire film on it’s back. him & the soundtrack of this film are EASILY the two strongest parts by far. the way denzel is able to capture roman’s autism & his autistic isms is fascinating. colin farrell & carmen elogo were also enjoyable, but their characters also felt like, rather flat in my opinion. kind of like a lot of things in this film fall VERY flat honestly cause of the direction & writing. i think they missed BIG by not delving deeper into roman’s past. we just get little pieces here & there, & the pieces we do get, i feel don’t add much to him as a character or to the story in general when there was genuinely more than a lot of things or paths they’ve could’ve gone down. that soundtrack was phenomenal though! & THAT ENDING WAS DEFINITELY A BIG WTF! 3.5/5 ON THE DENZEL METER. nothing denzel did wrong, he was phenomenal. i just feel the constrains of the film & writing really limited all the character could’ve been.
