The Town

Set in an alternative universe China where the ideological homogenization takes visual manifestation in the form of masks, "The Town" tells the story of a young mask-maker who dreams of getting a makeover and belonging to the group. Visually, this short is very beautiful with detailed characters and a super realistic background that reminds us of the middle of the last century. The character design, and especially that of the people who have undergone the mask surgery, is creepy and disconcerting. Though they look human, there is something cold and robot-like to them. A bit like Chinese steampunk androids. Where "The Town" completely fails, though, is in its propagandistic and heavy-handed approach to delivering its message. At times it's so unsubtle that its a bit like the director shouting at us what we should think and feel about the Chinese government. It's not only annoying but also kind of disrespectful towards the audience and their facilities for independent thought. This results in a movie that tries to indoctrinate the audience into thinking that indoctrination is bad.

Not bad, not good. The most average film to ever average. Did this have to be 2.5 hours long? I feel misled by the Letterboxd display of the runtime. The Rip (2026),meet The Town (2010). The name is pretty unoriginal too. Just overall uninspiring, a bit dull, with a few good action pieces here and there.

Meu único problema com esse filme é a duração dele. A partir de uma certa parte, a história fica mais lenta e perde o passing que tinha antes.

81/100 Ben Affleck might just be a better director than an actor even though he is a pretty good actor. Lots of what he makes is very good, mostly original as well. This one is not original but a real good combination of different driving plots of certain classics. At first I thought it’s gonna be a simple heist film but it turned out better, got more detailed as it went on. I liked Jeremy Renner a lot in this.
