Escape from New York

Enjoying this a good deal more now then whenever I last saw it. I miss this kind of breathing room and slow simmer in an otherwise scrap-happy flick. Has its own brand of serenity about it.

Escape from New York

They really don’t make em like this anymore. Matte paintings, miniatures, practical effects, actors who actually look like people. There’s a real tactile feeling in this film, that you just don’t get anymore, hell, even ESCAPE FROM LA loses some of the magic captured here.  Still absolutely beautiful, A Number One filmmaking!

Escape from New York

Directors Suite: John Carpenter (Dirty Synths, Stabs, and Eyepatches) (https://boxd.it/12RhS) Home to convicts and crooks, 1997 New York and its gangs of grease and grime, percolating in grit. Maximum security prison lockdown; a jungle of roads, towers, and muck padlocked against the rest of the world. A 24 hour clock blimping away the hours to termination or survival. Strapped to the wrist of a war-hero turned criminal hangs life and death; a clear future in sight if things go well. Snake Plissken: a desperado with an eye-patch, laced with a tank-top and a firearm, on a mission to save the President of the United States in the country's most treacherous place. A dark and stylish action of sorts, Carpenter's Escape from New York fails to reach the highs of its bombastic premise, but hey, at least we get the badass presence of Kurt Russel who is a total blast to watch, despite his lack of human characteristics. The action is subtle and explosive altogether; Carpenter directs his first action flick of the 1980s in deliberately gritty and good form. The director carries such expertise in directing the chaotic fun in a beat-up world. 3.8/5

Escape from New York

where was staten island in all this? were they the only borough to not be made into a prison? did the government forget about them? because that would be ironic
