The French Dispatch

Wes Anderson’s latest film is the most Wes Anderson Wes Anderson film you’ll ever see. It’s got beautiful cinematography, it’s shot in a very unique and clever way and the colours, even black and white, pop like always. The film is almost an anthology film, with the first two of the three being my favourites. They’re all good and the overarching story is interesting and well told. I don’t think it’s his most amazing work, and I’m not huge on anthology films, but this was still a joy to watch. Also this has more stars than grains of sand and they all do a fantastic job.

The French Dispatch

As entrancing (or off-putting) as anything he's done. Probably his most verbose film yet, I can see why if you haven't boarded the Wes Express by now there likely won't be anything here to draw you in further and probably quite a lot to keep one at arm's length. The characteristic dry narration does feel sterile at first, but nearly every outing's antiseptic start blossoms into just a wealth of feeling. I've been smitten with it since at least Rushmore, so my "journalistic integrity" is compromised from the get-go! Rich tableaus, monochromatic compositions, and Andersonian myth-and-mirth-making of that upper strata of writing life from a bygone writers era. Lovely and lively, I can't get enough of this stuff!
