Sadly this live-action remake didn’t live up to the original cartoon, and missed the mark in many areas. The lack of music and Mushu really took a lot away, the directing was poor with too many slow motion moments. It was fun to watch, but nothing special.

Mulan

when it was announced that disney was going to make a live action of mulan, i was intrigued, bec i think mulan is a story that could be made into a great live action, especially with disney's money. but the more i heard about the plot of the story, the new characters added, the characters that got removed, and no musical, i was worried and i wasn't that excited for it anymore. but i do understand why they decided to remove the musicals and some characters (mushu and cricket). they wanted mulan's live action to be on the realistic side and i do think they did that part pretty well. (except for the part where she removed her bun right before going to war like huh???)  i'm still kinda on the fence about the chi thing, bec i think even without the chi mulan could still defeat the enemies, with her wits and determination. but i also know that chi is a part of traditional chinese culture, so that's nice. sigh idk. i do know that the cinematography and colors used for mulan are absolutely beautiful, i couldn't take my eyes off the screen. but i wasn't a big fan of some of the camera work during the fight scenes. and i'm still disappointed that disney chose to hire a white director.  overall, it's a pretty good solid live action!

Mulan

Much more serious than the animated predecessor, Mulan shows that, when under good direction, a live action remake can flourish. Vibrant with life, this adaptation soars with some stunning cinematography, and equally as beautiful costuming. While it may lack the lightheartedness of the animated version, this one plants its roots in the original tale, showing that you don’t need dragons or songs to make a film compelling and interesting. I’m very imprseed with this story, and is the strongest of the live action remakes thus far. It is outragrous that this film is $30 to own at the moment, which I thankfully didn’t pay (Disney already gets my money for Disney+, I’m not paying any more for this film, so I found it elsewhere). It may be a good film, but this is one that can wait until it’s on Disney+ in December.
