Disney classic, Pocahontas is a fun easy watch. The story is entertaining and tells a good message, and the animation is great as always with Disney. This didn’t do too much different to any other Disney princess film, but it was still a fun watch.

Pocahontas

absolutely torn with this one. this has always been one of, if not my favorite disney movie. and i watched it tonight for the first time in over a decade. the art style, music, atmosphere, visuals, character design are still among my favorite but now knowing the truth behind the story and seeing things that 10 year old me didn’t see makes the watch a bit uncomfortable. i understand the idea of revisionist history when it comes to art but i think trying to justify some of the actions as if to pretend they never happened is incredibly tone deaf, even for the 90s. they certainly present the actions of the white man in a negative manor which is great but then she...falls...in love...with the white man...great. and THEN tries to vilify (to an extent) kocoum and powhatan, are you kidding. plus ratcliffe doesn’t have the ‘fun’ or sometimes charm that good disney villains have, he just spews straight racism the entire movie. also i know that much of classic disney are incredibly downplayed versions of gruesome fairy tales, but pocahontas wasn’t a fairy tale. i think it would have been much better had disney told a completely original story of native americans. i love so much about it but there are some very problematic underlying issues.

Pocahontas

❝You think the only people who are people, are people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll find things you never knew, you never knew.❞ ❝You can own the Earth, and all you'll own is earth.❞ · · ───── ·⋆⋅𖤓⋅⋆· ───── · · Pocahontas is one of Disney's most visually stunning films, but it truly baffles my mind that they thought it was alright to romanticise the tragic and horrific story of Matoaka. While I appreciate the sentiment of the song 'Colours of the Wind', and while it's absolutely beautifully composed and sung, the rest of the film is just white saviour propaganda, and I can't get behind that. So, while I don't want to give a low rating to one of the only princesses of colour in the Disney lineup, it would behoove me to do so.
