64/100 Check out my 2023 ranked - boxd.it/qk54W (https://boxd.it/qk54W) And with that I have completed my most anticipated list for 2023, while in most part a good one, some films were disappointing such as this. Ridley Scott fucks this movie up. Let’s start with the casting, while I think Vanessa Kirby was great as Joséphine, I don’t think Joaquin was the right choice for Napoleon, there could’ve been better choices, he does what he can with the script which by the way is average at best. The war sequences are good but at times too chaotic to look at (I understand that war is chaotic but to the viewer, it could’ve been showed better, LOTR style). The fundamental problem with this film is that it is a film about Napoleon and Josephine titled Napoleon. This man is arguably the greatest general of all time and we only got to see 3 out of his 61 exploits? Ridley spends a lot of time exploring their relationship which is essential but we want to see what Napoleon was like in the field that everyone knows him for. We only get to see one instance of him showing his commanding skills and even that is at the end when he loses to the British in his final battle. Overall, a disappointing film because when the first trailer released, I had very high hopes and you usually trust Ridley with war epics. Now I know he’ll release his 4 hour cut and it’ll probably be much better but why should we have to watch a director’s cut every single time? Why can’t our first viewing experience simply not be good enough? Also Vanessa Kirby’s boobs were about to burst out constantly at the beginning. Ridley, you should’ve let it. And Napoleon praised the English breakfast… motherfucker how dare you!
