Genuinely funny, something which so many try and fail at, this actually made me laugh out loud quite a few times. Films like Airplane! are clearly inspired by this, with slapstick comedy as fast as you can. Don’t get me wrong, some of the jokes clearly miss, but most land well and the overarching story is just as relevant now as it was 90 years ago. So much changes, but really nothing does at all. “He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot.”

Duck Soup

Silly and fun. A quick easy watch. Loads of gags.

Duck Soup

“I got a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it.” My introduction to the Marx Brothers, and I can safely say this is one of the best comedy films I have seen. A film with a satirical edge so sharp, no one idea is safe from it — the comparison of nationalism to a minstrel show is an apt one. Duck Soup may make a mockery of government but that never manages to get in the way of the comedy. Before anything else, this is supposed to be an absurdist, slapstick experience and it manages to be one of the best. Jokes flying by at a speed I’ve never seen, and to my surprise a great amount of them land. It’s a sincerely funny movie and a great one at that. It’s got some of the best jokes I’ve heard and has managed to stand the test of time. So very influential to many different mediums, The Marx Brothers have crafted a masterpiece.
