Dances with wolves is not the epic I expected it to be, in fact it’s not really an epic at all. There are no massive battle scenes, the film is mainly about three or four characters, mainly Costner as the lead. It’s a fine film, nothing really bad apart from a runtime of three hours, but it does move at a decent pace. Still not sure why his wife in the film was happy to be a Native American, after they brutally slaughtered her family in front of her, Stockholm syndrome, maybe? Apart from that it’s a nice enough story but apart from that not much to talk about.

Look, I get it, GOODFELLAS should’ve won Best Picture. That doesn’t take away from the fact that DANCES WITH WOLVES is a damn good film in its own right, beautifully shot, and lovingly told. Maybe it’s just that I grew up on this movie, maybe it’s the South Dakota of it all, who knows? But this is a really good movie, that gets unfairly shit on because the Academy Awards often suck.
