For the first 3/4 of this it’s incredibly boring and not a lot happens, but it is fun watching Sophia Loren giving a truly excellent performance. Then for the last 1/4 Loren’s character and her 13 year old daughter get gang r*ped out of nowhere, and then the 13 year old is so traumatised that she goes off with an older man to a ‘dance’. Disgusting to watch and very difficult to stomach. I find r*pe pretty much the only thing I cannot stand to watch in any film and in this it’s absolutely brutal. I don’t think it was necessary and it doesn’t feel in any way justified to me. I know the film is showing the horrors of war but, in my opinion, there are better ways to go about it. Sure, the film did what it intended though and left me shocked. It’s no masterpiece but Loren’s performance alone is worthy of a high rating. I hope to never watch this again for the rest of my life.
