Diary Entry forDead of Night
Spooky and original, DON is not Bob Clark’s best film, that would be Black Christmas, but this is definitely an entertaining horror. It’s got a lot going for it, great performances and some genuinely freighting moments, the only think it’s lacking is a uniqueness. It feels like a lot of other horror films and doesn’t really stand out. Still a good film, but doesn’t do enough to be a masterpiece.

“𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦.” Startling. A vampire-zombie narrative that revels in the post war trauma and how it affects not just the individual, but all surrounding forms of love around said individual. To create trauma as a form of callous that warps the face and creates a sinful appetite is one that is infectious. Hurts all. Bleak. Pasty grains on film, the underbudget aesthetics work well in Clark’s favor. Grief, pain, and shame are all part of the horror on top of the kills throughout. The end is wild. Melodramatic. Sweeps with feelings. And is punched through with so much horror. I was waiting for the end to turn sour, to see one last horror, only to be surprised by the sorrow that springs. “𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺.”
