Diary Entry forThe Unknown
What a film and what a message. “Through hate she found love and through love he found hate”. Fantastic acting and a story which is still widely the focus of society today. Really enjoyed this.

The Unknown
What a stunning and thrilling film. Todd Browning’s The Unknown feels like a precursor to his more well-known film Freaks, focusing on a criminal posing as someone involved in a circus. In a mere 49 minutes, Browning manages to create compelling characters and a plot that is fully fleshed out, while keeping the audience in suspense. There is an impressive amount of control in the film, doubling down on creating a tense atmosphere and an unforgettable climax. The Unknown is a fantastic film, I am very glad that I had the chance to catch it before it gets taken off of the Criterion Channel. I think I’ll have to try to catch a few more films featured in the Joan Crawford collection before they disappear at the end of the month.

Hooptober 9 (https://boxd.it/iw0h4) #24 of 33 • 1 Lon Chaney (https://letterboxd.com/actor/lon-chaney/genre/horror/) film (NOT Jr.) AND 1 of 8 different decades (https://letterboxd.com/films/genre/horror/by/release/size/small/) (1920s) Much like Freaks (https://letterboxd.com/film/freaks/), Browning just has a way with conveying sinister overtones through actions and images only. This being my first Lon Chaney (not Jr.) film, I am already a fan.
The Unknown
"Men! The beasts! God would show wisdom if he took the hands from all of them!" YEP YEP YEP! Speak on it queen!! the circus backdrop is used well and creates alot of moments of exciting thrills, interesting/ visually appealing backgrounds, and unique character dynamics. The foot acting was stuff of Quinton Tarantino's wet dreams, pure cinema. Light spoilers side tangent but: There is something to be said about the way Alonzo is like a proto incel looksmaxxer. In that, instead of treating women like human beings, he hyperfocuses on what he assumes are objective measurements of attractiveness and physical non-negotiables; ultimately giving into to self-mutilation and violence in the process. His flawed perspective doing irreparable damage to both himself and to his relationship with others. Ultimately He is so focused on owning a women he feels entitled to the affection of, and so consumed by self hatred, he doesn't even attempt to pursue her with genuine respect and honesty; giving into trickery and deceit until the very end.
