This early Villeneuve film has drawn criticism over time for its portrayal of the Canadian tragedy in 1989. At the face it follows a man who is an incel as he goes to his local college and shoots every women he sees. Pretty disgusting as you can imagine, and where the film falters is at the secondary lead being a male saviour of sorts, who doesn’t actually do much but is understandably upset at the events which unfold. I think this film would’ve been far better if the women were more explored instead of the killer and the male ‘hero’. We don’t find anything out about the women bar the sexist remarks during the job interview. The film isn’t inherently bad but it could’ve done with a rework on the focus. The ending of her being pregnant also feels a bit cheap, because her choice to have children shouldn’t impact the opinion on her from the audience. Fuck incels and fuck misogyny.

Polytechnique

this one is pretty divisive. it’s a film about a real life tragedy that affected women first and foremost, yet it decides to centre the event about the men involved. the shooter gets his motivations laid out for us and the other guy who tried to save some of the victims was more developed too. meanwhile the women involved barely were characterised. though it is well directed, i don’t know if i can get past that personally.
