Diary Entry forTornado
Feel like this was just wasted potential. The premise and story are both simple enough, but the cast are massively underdeveloped and you end up not caring for any of them. No real backstory for literally any of the characters, and most of the villains crew don’t do anything notable or interesting. You end up just not caring what happens to any of them, Tornado doesn’t kill anywhere near enough people for this to be interesting and out of all the kills she does only one is of any note. Disappointing in truth.

74/100 Check out my 2025 ranked - boxd.it/Fn1G4 (https://boxd.it/Fn1G4) Edit #1: Also, I really wish the frame was bigger, that wide frame gave this a modern look and this could’ve given proper 80s vibes had they just given us like a 16:9, shit would’ve been gorgeous. Scotland is truly heaven on Earth, there are so many gorgeous shots solely reliant on the Scottish highlands being as beautiful as they are. I personally loved the 1790s time period and the setting, even the premise was so appealing to me and I went into this thinking this would be one of the most underrated films of the year and while I do like what it offered, it does unfortunately suffer from being too real. “For those who wish to survive in battle, there is only death.” This means that she’s done trying to survive, done being a coward and trying to escape, it is time to fight back. Excellent line but it comes with 20 minutes left to the movie and yes it’s a very short film at about 1.5 hours but the revenge begins at the very end and even that is more strategic and roninesque but they talk about samurai. For a film that’s trying to be different by using different camera angles, all kinds of shots and lots of pauses, it suffers from being too real. It is exactly how I’d imagine a revenge in real life would go but that doesn’t quite cut it for such a film. Kôki is good and the others play their parts but there’s not a lot to this film. A lot of running, hiding and at last killing. I had a mixed time with the dramatic dialogue but I did root for the protagonist. The best part however was probably the puppet show, that was some true bit of samurai action, I had no clue puppet shows could be so advanced. I had a good time and even though I empathise with the decision making, I can’t help but envy what we could’ve gotten with a more proactive approach; with that gorgeous setting, it could have been one for the ages.

I really liked this a lot. A tad plodding in some places, and overall pretty predictable, but with a finale that is undeniably cool. Kôki is excellent in this. She has a commanding presence and you can see the talent all over the screen. It has a nice tight script, perfect runtime for the story it’s telling, and is shot very well. Everything looks and feels great here. I’ve become a big fan of John Maclean’s style. I don’t think he makes films that are mindblowingly great, but I’m a fan of the way he tells his stories. From what I’ve seen he is a very solid filmmaker with a ton of talent and I’ll look forward to whatever his next project entails as I think he’ll only get better from here. He’s only directed two feature films in 10 years, so I hope to see more work come his way in the very near future.
Tornado
For it's simple (to a point of almost poetry) plot, and acting performances that at times feel like carefully planned and lightly rehearsed choreography, the visuals make up for almost every shortfall. The colors are vibrant, autumnal, and eye-catching. The warmth of the leaves and fire, the striking, red, blood, and the oranges of the sunrise and sunset are so warm. The cools are crisp and light, the blues of the sky, the men's eyes who chase tornado, and the cold and isolating night are so cool. Both extremes perfectly contrast and meld together. The framing of the mountain ranges, of bodys, both living and deceased, have their moments of euphoric, stunning, beautiful composition, that when paired with the beautiful colors and crispy and clear resolution hit just right. Not perfect by any means but definitely worth a watch if you're interested in seeing some good ass color grading or if you just wanna see a severed hand fire a pistol (it was cool af).
