Surprised by how much I enjoyed this and how many people on here seem to hate it. It’s a historical epic which feels a lot less serious than many other historical epics, but at the same time it almost takes itself too seriously? I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s a good film and the runtime goes by reasonably quickly. FREEDOM! Turns out this isn’t historically accurate in the slightest and is pretty much fiction, but still a fun time.

81/100 Have had this downloaded for quite some time now but I never got around to it because of its runtime even though I’ve completed multiple longer films and shows in that time frame. Anyway I’m glad I finally got to it. It’s a tragedy. I thought it’s gonna be a hopeful film with him winning the war but it was sad through and through. Mel Gibson acts very well and his direction is pretty good too. He likes to have some brutal scenes in his films and this was no different. The soundtrack is absolutely incredible, so soothing and emotional. James Horner is truly underrated. He’s done so much great work but I rarely see him getting spoken about. It’s shot in the countryside so it doesn’t take much else to make this film beautiful. Also, yes they did drag the film at certain points, especially with his death but mostly, I felt they did well with the timing. Apparently this film is quite historically inaccurate but I don’t blame em too much. How else would you get such a story from facts alone? Consider this an adaptation. Overall, a beautiful but heartbreaking film. Also, Mel Gibson you sly motherfucker, you made out with two absolute baddies in Catherine McCormack and Sophie Marceau but especially Sophie because wow she was absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous.

Welcome to another episode of "watched a film from start to finish while on the bus going home from uni"! Note to self: sit a bit closer next time so you can see the subtitles more (can't hear it much either)
