The mermaid scene is cool, the rest of it sadly drags quite heavily. It starts as a soft reboot of the series and then just seems to drag on, not sure why the Spanish are even involved here as they don’t really have any impact on the story for 95% of the film. Think the pirates vs the English alone would’ve worked fine again but oh well, it’s not a great time but no offensively bad either.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

After over a decade, this film still seems to add a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, since there really wasn’t a need to make it. Even though the third film At World’s End might have left it open ended, there really wasn’t a need to revisit this series. But, at least this film is a bit of fun, even if the characters aren’t as developed as those in the original trilogy. It’s got a great cast that does their best at giving these new characters life, it’s just a shame that the potential for Ian McShane’s Blackbeard was pretty wasted. I’m still not a huge fan of this film, but I definitely don’t think it’s the worst of the bunch by a long shot.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

On Stranger Tides is the odd duck of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. It’s the only one that is truly standalone, which can make it easy for anybody to get into, but doesn’t further these characters that the original trilogy built up. In the grand scheme of things, this film is just a small blip in the events of this world that has been built - even if things had ended a bit badly, it would be inconsequential to what the next film brings on. Rob Marshall behind the camera was an interesting choice, who unfortunately didn’t bring the same flair that Verbinski did, leaving the film seemingly flat. It feels like this was the first one made solely for the sake of making a profit, and it shows. It’s still a watchable and quite enjoyable film, but is nowhere near as polished and fun as the original three.
