A fantastic noir film which feels almost Hitchcock at time, high and low focuses on a man faced with a difficult choice, lose his fortune to save another man’s child. The man at first chooses his fortune but quickly reconsiders and then does everything he can to save the boy. It’s a fantastic story which is spilt into three sections, my favourite of which being the first. Shot entirely in one room, the focus on mortality is so well executed and all the performances are some of the greatest performances of all time. A film everyone should watch.

High and Low
Very engaging with a solid plot, great score, and excellent directing from Kurosawa. It does linger a tiny bit at times, so minus half a star. This is the first of his filmography I’ve seen, and I’m excited to check out more of his work. Intrusive thought: why did the junkies act like they were zombies lol ?

Beautiful crime thriller with amazing direction by the great Akira Kurosawa. He took a simple plot and turned it into a powerful commentary on class disparity, economic inequality, and social hierarchy. The direction and cinematography are brilliant with masterful blocking throughout. If you want to learn blocking watch this one. Truly a masterpiece.
High and Low
Finally watched a Kurosawa film Holy shit this is one of the best directed films I have ever seen from how it was blocked and framed to look like ur watching a play especially within the 1st half. I was hooked and called it perfect but then it takes a dip during the 2nd half mostly cause I wanted more of Gondo and not just fully on the detectives. However I love exploring this city seeing the class divide and the ending is perfection to me Can’t wait to check out more from him
