Jesus what an emotional time. War films have never really been my favourite, despite there being so many classics of the genre, but this one I did enjoy. Thought the first half or so was quite slow, but the scenes on the bridge were all excellent. Still unsure how it’s possible for a guy with no legs to sit up, but we’ll ignore that. A good time.

Hacksaw Ridge

War films are films that I typically don't enjoy. There are the few exceptions, like Full Metal Jacket that I love, but for the most part, war just is something that I don't enjoy watching. Hearing about this film before it came out, I knew it was one that I wasn't going to want to watch. After it was nominated for some Oscars, I knew it was one that I needed to watch, but one that I wasn't going to be happy to watch. I only really knew that the film was about war and that's all that I needed to know. Hacksaw Ridge is one of those rare war movies that get to me. It's an extremely powerful film with some surprising acting and fantastic directing. I was so surprised to see how emotional of a film this ended up being, especially the climax of the film. When a film covers something that is based on a true story, or even base it on someone who did something as heroic as Doss was, the filmmakers want to make sure they do a good job to properly portray them (like what Hidden Figures was able to do). Hacksaw Ridge does a great job maintaining the respect for someone who did as heroic an action as Doss did. Mel Gibson did a great job directing, keeping focus on Doss instead of getting lost in the war scenes. The film was surprisingly well done and had some fantastic scenes. I still don't get why Mel Gibson insists this is an independent film, since it was produced by a large company with a budget of $40 million. Regardless of his opinion, Haksaw Ridge is one of the those rare war movies that I actually enjoyed watching and ended up getting super emotional about. It's a great story that I feel needed to eventually be told and I'm glad they treated this story with the respect that it deserves. While it may not be Best Picture quality for me, Hacksaw Ridge is still a really good film.
