Diary Entry forWings
Wings has a lot of heart and some excellent plane sequences, paired with great performances make for an enjoyable watch. What isn’t so enjoyable is the runtime, clocking in nearly 2 and a half hours. Still, it’s better than a lot of best pictures winners, the scene where the camera goes over multiple tables is better than some best picture winners alone. A good film which I don’t think I’ll ever rewatch.

Wings
After last night’s historic moment, I thought it was about time that I finally caught up on all of the previous winners of the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. Wings takes the highest prize in 1927, and from what I’ve gathered, it caused quite a controversy as well. It seems that this film was catered toward a particular group of people, particularly those interested in war, with the romance element bringing anyone else in. It’s a fun film at times, but the near two-and-a-half hour runtime really started to drag along. I unfortunately haven’t seen many other silent films, but this one was one of the better that I have seen. It’s clear this was a love-letter to those who served in the first World War, and isn’t subtle at all with its American exceptionalism. Overall, this is an intersting choice to take the first Best Picture win, and I’m very excited to see what else I’ve been missing out on.
Wings
A technical marvel for its time, Wings brings the action of plane stunts, the romance of two young lovers, and a plot that was stretched on a little too long. This film easily could’ve been shorter, but I understand they really wanted to tell a captivating story, but some cuts would’ve really benefited this film in the end. Still, it’s an interesting first Best Picture winner, especially knowing it’s only one of two silent films (if we’re going off main winners, though I do consider Sunrisea winner as well and will be watching it for my catch up).

ACTIONx52(023) (https://letterboxd.com/allbeef/list/actionx52023/) #43 of 52 | Watch an action film about aviation (https://letterboxd.com/bachian/list/aviation/genre/action/). Wow, I should NOT have watched this on Tubi. The endless loop of the same piano song over and over again throughout the entire 2+ hours kind of ruined this film for me. Luckily, the stunts and practical effects and camera shots help alleviate it a bit. Decent movie, understandably praised, maybe hasn't aged perfectly but still holds up pretty well. Personally, just not for me but I can see why others like it.
