The Kid is by all means a masterpiece. Over 100 years since its release and it’s still better than many films which release today. The kid gives a perfect performance at about five years old, crazy to watch. The dream sequence where he gets shot is genuinely genius, my first Chaplin movie but definitely not my last.

The Kid

I've decided to give it another go at watching every movie in the Letterboxd Top 250 Collected list from the 1920s to 2020s to see what the best of the decades look like and what they bring to the table today. I tried doing this earlier in the year, but school and college applications kicked my ass and I truly want to watch every movie on this list. And since I only made it around 2% of the way, I decided to start over and log a review for each film. And I'm glad I'm doing it because this film was better upon a rewatch. I have a newfound appreciation for what this film is trying to accomplish, but I still have some issues. Most of my appreciation for this film is how Charlie Chaplin depicts his love for the child. Love would make and does make one do crazy things and I think he illustrates this point beautifully. I don't think he literally climbs on rooftops to chase after his child, but I think his love for the kid WOULD make him do these things. It's shown time and time again how dedicated Chaplin is to making the best of his situation for the kid. However, this movie doesn't solely focus on the two and that's where some of my issues start. I didn't care for the man who became famous and the woman was interesting until she became rich and successful. Their relationship is barely talked about and their stories are dull. I feel like it's time that could've been better spent on the main two characters instead. However, she becomes interesting again when she discovers the kid is hers. The story, for the most part, is great. However, the dream sequence completely takes me out of the film. I get that it's supposed to be a dream world where everything is perfect for Chaplin where even there he can't find peace, but it gets ridiculous. Another thing that I found unsatisfying with the story is the ending. The ending was abrupt and "the easy way out" instead of giving the movie the great ending it should've gotten, whatever that might've been. Still, I think the movie is good and I am grateful to have decided to see it again. 6/10.

The Kid
