Purple Rain

The Pop God that is Prince, shimmering in the spotlight of purple haze and kaleidoscope lights—his motorbike, purple and big, sitting in the alleyway next door to the rock musical functions. Purple Rain is at its best when in the region of the musically talented artist's on stage performances—the fact the entire soundtrack album is showcased in flashy streams of melodic visuals and the presence of live instruments and band just backs up the enthralling watch of it all. Prince's on stage behavior is special, even though there is the possibility it was all rehearsed—the way the artist moves, cries, and splits into electric dance moves is beautifully captured in cinema-like photography. As for the story, it really makes no sense, despite its weariness to engage audiences in a dark yet hopeful tale of a man turning into his father—there's that, and the fact this film feels awfully subjective to disrespecting women and using that to understanding men's selfish and self-centered ways. Either way, Purple Rain is probably the best rock musical you'll see with the best music around—it's too bad the story isn't on par. 3.4/5
