Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

“There is surely nothing other than the single purpose of the present moment. A man’s life is a succession of moment after moment.” A gangster who follows the Way of the Samurai is such a cool concept. This film had some solid action sequences, needle drops, and wisdom. Makes me want to find a copy of Hagakure - The Book of the Samurai and read it. Also, who knew mobsters loved old cartoons so much?

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

this is so close to being one of my favorites because i really do love almost everything about this film. but i really hate the way the mob was handled and this isn't coming from a place of deep respect or admiration or something i just think they're all such cartoonishly tropey mobsters. like they feel like a goofy SNL skit walking around a world filled with otherwise really interesting people. maybe that's the point given their obsession with the literal classic cartoons. no clue if that's the intention. I doubt it. but either way this would've been an instant classic if not for how awful the writing is for them still loved everything outside of them. ghost dog is such an interesting character who's contemplative nature and appreciation for life given his job is something that i really enjoyed. his sheathing of his gun was a bit cheesy though i can totally see his character doing that, i chuckled every time he did really good stuff overall but i could see the greatness peeking through and just really wanted it to get there

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

Reminds me of DRIVE in the way it is light on plot, but heavy on aesthetic and mood. Incredible score by The RZA, a beautiful performance by Whitaker, and gorgeously directed by Jarmusch. In the wrongs hands this would be incredibly absurd, but the absolute seriousness and commitment brought to the affair, along with the moments it carved out some whimsy, really make it all work. Definitely not going to wait 20 years before watching this again.
