This film destroyed me
Queen & Slim
Most movements begin with anger. This is a film that has understood its anger and comes to terms with how black issues should present themselves in a respectful manner. We get man and woman. We get two different backgrounds when it comes to the black experience. We see how they survive with each other. And when they come into contact with a broad cast of characters, they trust their tests not based on skin color, but the danger that's placed on their very body, what the media says about their body, and how their body reacts in a place of danger, and by place I mean, literally, everyday life. Given the beautiful themes of the film, the structure falls apart in the latter parts of the film. It eventually becomes a tired game of cat and mouse, to get or be gotten. The running time definitely could've been reserved to keep up with the tenacity of its impact. Daring and gorgeous, with a swathing score of hope by the great Dev Hynes. <3
