Whimsical nightmare fuel wrapped in stop-motion. My childhood was literally cursed. At least it looked cute.

Coraline

A masterpiece which is nothing short of amazing. Loved this when I was a kid and still love it now, I was long overdue a rewatch. The story is simple yet effective and shows what neglect can do to a child, obviously in this it’s more extreme than most but still, the message is clear. Loneliness can drive a person away and it almost traps Coraline into what can only be described as a version of hell. The web scene is truly iconic and my favourite of the movie. Did she really escape?

Coraline

2009 was a wild year for animated cinema. Greatness was being dropped left and right. We got Up, Mr. Fantastic Fox, The Princess and the Frog, and of course, Coraline. Coraline's stop-motion animation is phenomenal. Knowing that this movie took four years to make shows how much care and effort was put into it. Another neat aspect of this was the cinematography. Various shots throughout the movie are mesmerizingly good. In addition, the quality doesn't stop with the animation; it also extends into the characters and story. The story is undoubtedly unique, and the characters each have their own charm, drastically improving the watching experience. With all of this said, I don't believe Coraline is perfect. I felt like as more time progressed, it was starting to lose me, but only very slightly. Coraline is a fantastic film nonetheless. 9/10; I'll never get over how cool this animation is.
