Monster movie with big heart, bigger metaphors, and the most mid-2000s CGI you’ll ever forgive.

The Host

73/100 While I think this is a good film and made in a grounded fashion, it feels at many points like a nothing film. There is sadness but it’s overlapped by comedy at those times, there’s poor decisions and there’s resourcefulness at the same time. And it’s not fruitful, well partially. It’s a unique take on the monster genre and the smaller scale certainly builds this film. This CGI is mostly poor but that’s nothing to complain about since it’s a 2006 film; feel practical effects would’ve been better. Acting is good but the film strays a lot and suddenly changes direction or suddenly introduces acts which make it displeasing to watch and follow. The eating scene of the whole family is the best scene of the film, really portrays loss and yearning extremely well.
