Diary Entry forPersian Lessons
Imagine having to survive in a Nazi camp with the most fragile lie: claiming you can speak Persian when you actually can’t. Gilles, the main character in Persian Lessons (2020), invents a fake language just to deceive an SS officer. Every word is a gamble with his life — and at the same time, a way to preserve the memory of hundreds of other prisoners. The visuals are strikingly elegant: cold, yet still beautiful. The pacing is unusual — slow but full of tension — keeping you constantly wondering: when will this lie finally collapse? A criminally underrated war film, leaning more toward a psychological thriller than just another war drama.
