Matthias & Maxime is about all the things we feel but don’t say — the awkward pauses, the lingering stares, the closeness that feels just a little too electric. Dolan captures the ache of a friendship evolving into something messier, more tender, and harder to define. It’s not dramatic or explosive — it’s real, quiet, and devastating in the way that love often is when no one’s brave enough to name it.

so this is awkward… first movie of the month which is also the last month so i decided to go out with a film i’ve been dying to watch. No literally, if only you guys knew the trials and tribulations i had to go through in order to watch this film, but I’ll spare you the details.  Man… where do i begin! I’ll start things off by acknowledging how tragic this film truly is. Yes we see Maxims circumstances and the relationships he has with this family and even despite these challenges he faces, he still finds a way to shoulder on the burdens and keeps it pushing no matter how hard or hopeless it may be at times. And i just love how his friends showcase how sometimes your blood family may not be your true family but its the people you meet along the way in life who you create bonds and community with that outweigh the people you share blood with.  Matt on the other hand… well, he’s a complete mess and i think we see this at the beginning of the film at the party with his friends. He comes off as someone who’s smart, well articulate, confident and overall “grounded” when in reality he is none of those things and as the film progresses, we get to see him slowly “decay” into this person who can’t control his emotions, someone who’s anxious, someone who isn’t confident in what he even does for a living. He seems to be living in a different world compared to the rest of his friends under this facade of having things straight when in reality they aren’t (no pun intended)  Maxim seems to be someone who’s accepted and understands his identity compared to Matt who is clearly in denial as he can’t even acknowledge the kiss that he and Maxim shared in high school. The most ironic part of this film is that it perfectly showcases how his friends and even is girlfriend would be people who would understand and accept Matt and Maxim for who they are without prejudice or discrimination being thrown at them but still this is a battle that one has to fight from the inside and the ending of this film doesn’t give us the answer to the big question it was building up to which is the one and only gripe i have with this film.  One aspect this film amongst many highlights how many men live in a cage where they have the key to unlock, but unfortunately for some it may not be easy to make the intrinsic decision to come out of it due to a plethora of reasons.
