The Order
85/100 Check out my 2024 ranked - boxd.it/shaTi (https://boxd.it/shaTi) Nicholas Hoult in 2024 played a hero, an antihero and a villain. His best role was as a villain in this film which is the hidden gem of 2024. Every year I find a film that I hadn’t heard of which I accidentally come across and I decide to watch it immediately, no adding to the watchlist nothing. This is a grounded film dealing with white supremacy in the 80s. It really could be categorised as an excellent heist movie if not for the serious racism theme. It does a lot of things right, the acting from Nicholas Hoult in particular is excellent, it’s tough to steal the show with Jude Law in the same picture but he’s great, arguably his best performance of 2024. Maybe behind that pretty face he is a proper villain and this makes me even more excited for Superman now. Jude Law was intense and in many ways the typical FBI lead detective in Hollywood thrillers but they didn’t waste time explaining this background, they did not sway from the subject matter and his interrogation scene in the jail cell was really really good. The cinematography is sublime, the nature, the fire, the backshots and the focus; and the soundtrack is really really good, it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb or overshadow the film, it fits in perfectly in the background, is subtle and real smart, perhaps my favourite part of this strong film on all fronts. The action sequences are well done, the writing is good in terms of dialogues but they didn’t explain the surrounding aspects of the film to their best ability. A really solid film based on real life events and one of the thousands of untold and potentially significant stories brought to the public light in a good manner. P.S. Not my best review because of the state of mind I am in right now, depression hits!
The Order
The thing that worked really well for me with this was Hoult. At first he feels almost slight, as though he can’t carry the weight of what others portray him to be. But then there’s a scene that leads into the third act where Hoult transforms, and you see him for the monster he is. It’s a pretty powerful testament to his ability as an actor, and the instincts (whether his or Kurzel’s) that you can almost see the switch get flipped. Hoult continues to be one of the best, and most interesting of the Millennial stars, and he only provides further evidence with his portrayal of Bob. 2024 Ranked (https://boxd.it/rJ4dW)
