Saw III is where the franchise stops feeling like a game and starts feeling like a funeral. Everything about it is heavier. Slower. More intimate. The traps aren’t just punishments anymore — they’re expressions of grief. Pain being passed from one person to another because no one knows what else to do with it. Jeff’s test isn’t really about survival. It’s about forgiveness, and how impossible that can feel when loss hollows you out. Every room forces him to confront not just the people he blames, but the version of himself he’s become. Not angry. Not alive. Just stuck. At the same time, watching John Kramer deteriorate strips away the illusion of control he’s always had. For the first time, he doesn’t feel like an unstoppable force. He feels fragile. Human. Scared. And Amanda — unraveling under the weight of needing his approval — becomes the film’s real tragedy. This is easily the cruelest film in the series, not because of what it shows, but because of what it understands. That some people don’t want to survive. They want their pain to mean something. And when it ends, it doesn’t feel like a twist. It feels like the inevitable consequence of everything that came before.

I would say that I’m a fan of the Saw franchise, however the same one note throughout the films offer no variety in the viewing experience. Like if it didn’t take itself so seriously maybe I could work with it a bit more. It was a little jarring watching this - I was so frustrated by the continuous poor choices made by everyone like arrghhh. No one to root for, somber and having to watch scenes through my fingers. Why do I put myself through this. Also the editing… like what if I had epilepsy? Ugh
