Argylle

Argylle

Argyle attempts to embody the spirit of spy films, but manages to craft a cheap example of what the genre can push out. I think my biggest problem with the film is honestly with Matthew Vaughn. His last 4 films have all had the same problem - they’re completely devoid of life. His directing style is so… bland?? There’s no pulse to his films, just computer generated worlds that feel doctored to the point of being unrecognizable. For being an “action” film director, he has no eye for making the action memorable. Any sequence within this film feels lifeless and dull, even when the color palate wants to trick you to think otherwise. I think Vaughn needs to step back and examine what makes a good action film good and embody that, rather than the sanitized stuff he’s put out. This film isn’t entirely bad. The cast does the best they can with the script (which wasn’t terribly strong to begin with), and Howard does a fantastic job at crafting a character you can root for. The dynamic between Howard and Rockwell was a bit odd, since there was no chemistry between the two whatsoever. That being said, they both still were enjoyable, even if their scenes together felt a bit off. I knew that I likely wasn’t going to enjoy this film a ton going into it, but I didn’t think I would dislike it as much as I did. I think I’m done giving Vaughn any more chances, he’s proven time and time again to be a director I just do not vibe with. Extra half a star for Alfie the cat.
