This movie’s got a lot going on; from the start, we’re hit with a bunch of complex characters. The vibe is super dark, with zero happy moments. Every character’s got their own issues that are all connected, which just adds to the story’s depth. Slow pace but the tension builds really well, The whole cast nailed it, and honestly, this might be Tom Holland’s best performance yet.

The Devil All the Time

A southern gothic that delves into the depths of darkness in humanity, The Devil All the Time boasts an impressive cast with material that can be quite difficult to digest, but ultimately leads to one of the year’s strongest narratives. I could list out the memorable performances in the film, but I’d end up listing a majority of the cast, since they all took the material and ran with it, creating well-rounded characters that feel hauntingly real. Director Antonio Campos chose to shoot this on film, rather than digital, which seems to be the norm for Netflix, which makes this film not only good to look at, but have a level of authenticity that make the sets and landscapes feel alive. As alive as the film may look, the subject matter is bleak, leaving no room for hope or inspiration, which can make it a difficult watch in the end. It’s certainly a slow-burn, letting itself settle in and let the stories naturally progress, even if it may make the film seem slow. I personally didn’t have a problem with the progression of the film, I can take a slow film, and this one surprisingly didn’t feel like 138 minutes. You can easily get lost in the film, especially with Holland and Pattinson’s performances, who really delve into their characters and put out some strong performances. The Devil All the Time certainly is a film that is not going to be an enjoyable watch for people, but is worth the time to watch, since it really is a strong film overall.
