End of the Century

“I’m getting closer to the coast and realize how much I hate arriving at a destination. Transition is always a relief. Destination means death to me.” What is a soulmate? Right place, right time? A cosmic designation? A forging of something intangible and perfect through sheer will alone? If it’s the former, then what a cruel world we live in knowing most will never meet their person. Though, what happens here in End of the Century iscrueler. Imagine meeting your person, or the person who could have been your person, and neither of you know yourselves yet. So you part. One of you forgets the connection, the other always remembers. Life goes on, you each live separate romantic lives. But when you’re reunited now something terrible happens, now you ask: “what if?”. One of my favorite finds from the last few years. You can watch it on any occasion and as long as you’re gay it’s going to hit. Gorgeous leads, great script, and wonderfully melancholy. “For a little while, I was falling in love.”

End of the Century

Chance meetings…phantom regrets…memories forgotten and fantasies indulged. END OF THE CENTURY is unexpectedly incredible. Have always been a fan of films where the characters walk around or sit around the city talking about life. About their pasts, regrets, their hopes. It can be a bit melancholy sure, but often times—like with this one, it’s bittersweet while being simultaneously affirming that most gay people (especially those from the 90s/00s) go through these same things. The late realizations, getting lost in the what-ifs, mourning the missed connections, thinking about if only you’d met someone a bit later! (And indulging in the fantasy of that “what-if”) It’s very thoughtful about all of this, feeling similar to something like Haigh’s Weekend in a lot of ways. That Space Age Love Song dance sequence is going to live inside of my head for a long time.

End of the Century

End of the Century need some improvement in wardrobe and make up department. After 20 years they're exactly the same. Unbelieveable. But, as a whole, End of the Century is a very beautiful movie you won't to skip. Underrated.
