Cool concept, great cast, but inconsistent execution. The film juggles a lot—nostalgia, politics, genre mashups—and doesn’t always stick the landing. Some characters come and go too fast to care about. But the last act absolutely rips, and I’d pay to see that stretched into a full feature. Also, Pedro Pascal and Jay Ellis in the same film is just unfair in the best way.

Freaky Tales

This movie fucking rips! Absolutely adore the little animations and editing effects, shifting aspect ratios, and homages to some of my favorite films/directors. Cinematography was on point, and the Metallica needle drop fit perfectly. I really like that it’s an anthology, and how all the stories intertwine with each other, brilliant storytelling. The final act and very end scene are so satisfying, chef’s kiss. Seeing Nazis get beat up/killed will always put a smile on my face ☺️

85/100 Check out my 2025 ranked - https://boxd.it/Fn1G4 I am always in the hunt for unique experiences and this 80s throwback loosely connected bloody anti-nazi anthology film is exactly that. I actually had such a good fucking time. We got to see Pedro being Joel again and like Joel him getting his beat to shit again… that’s twice in one year. We got to see Ben Mendelson being a perverted Nazi cop. We got to see Jay Ellis going all Kill Bill or in this case Kill Guy and my word he was aura-farming, that shit was neat! And we got Normani looking all gorgeous and shit, I’m not one for rap battles so that bit was too long for me but she did well.  There’s different AR for each tale and I don’t know the technical reasons for it but they make so much sense from a storytelling point of view and an aesthetic point of view. The first squarish frame fits well for that adlike tale setting up to a cool fight or a massacre rather, the classic 80s clothing adds to it. The larger and wider AR just fits for the rap battle tale because it’s a normal modern day relatable event and the wider and slimmer AR for the ending sequence gives you that classic cinematic feel where there’s planning and revenge and all elements of a small movie in itself. I don’t know maybe I’m rambling but I appreciated the AR changes. The grainy camerawork added a flavour and I guess I have to stop talking about how good a film looks these days because every film looks good these days, the cameras are just that good. And I really dug the electronica 80s soundtrack, it is my favourite genre. It’s such a ride and albeit deals with someone very serious themes doesn’t get you riled up or sad, great tone management. And lastly fuck you Tom Hanks for not giving me the name of the movie but also thank you for giving me enough info to ChatGPT that shit.

Really enjoyed this. I love it when you can tell a filmmaker is expressing real, deep, genuine love for a place. Great cast. Also, you just can’t go wrong with Op Ivy and beating the shit out of Nazis. 2025 Ranked (https://boxd.it/D1fDm)
