Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
There’s something inherently fascinating about the voyeuristic nature of behind-the-scenes footage, especially when it comes to the making of a masterpiece. There’s also an undeniable sense of morbid curiosity in watching, from the comfort of our homes, a disaster unfold. You’re not exactly deriving pleasure from it, but you simply can’t look away. Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse manages to be both of these ideas distilled into one documentary. Shot and partially narrated by Eleanor Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola’s wife, this is a collection of behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and candid moments that solidify one singular truth: the kind of art that shakes the cultural zeitgeist—art that truly matters—is built on the blood, sweat, and tears of those mad enough to see it through. No amount of generative AI, branding synergy, or perpetual IP slop will ever leave the same lasting footprint as films made by true artists. Not for money, not for fame, but for the relentless, all-consuming love of the artform. • Watched in 2025 — Ranked (https://boxd.it/C7Jq6) • 1990s — Ranked (https://boxd.it/AXiey)
Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
“How am I going to quit for myself? Am I going to say, ‘Francis, I quit’? He was so honest with himself throughout the whole filmmaking process of this and he did not give a fuck. This was his shit and he was making it no matter what. Genuinely Inspiring as a creative, do what you have to do at any means necessary; it’s more than film for him and all I can do is respect it “My greatest fear is to make a really shitty, embarrassing, pompous film on an important subject, and I am doing it. And I confront it. I acknowledge, I will tell you right straight from the most sincere depths of my heart, the film will not be good.” Little the fuck did you know. (But you knew) Also Martin Sheen is fucking insane.
