Fury
I’m not usually into war movies, but this is the best USA vs. Germany film I’ve seen. Unlike the exaggerated style of Inglourious Basterds, this felt raw and visceral. It’s a masterclass in "MEN" energy, stripping away the cringe scripts of modern cinema to show the brutal reality of brotherhood and the sheer cruelty of war. The movie is a reminder of how much war actually steals, how many love stories ended in the mud and how many futures were buried before they even began. You feel that loss in every frame. Norman’s rebirth is the soul of the story. Watching him evolve from a scared lil boy into a warrior who was the first to volunteer for a suicide mission was legendary. He stopped running and earned his honor in the dark. The final stand was devastating; seeing the crew fall one by one was a reminder that these weren't regular deaths, but sacrifices for the men sitting next to them. The moment that truly hit me was the end. When the toughest man in the room finally admits, "I’m scared too... I’m sorry, son," it changes everything. It proves that true bravery isn't the absence of fear it’s being terrified and closing the hatch anyway. I’m walking away from this speechless. It’s a reminder to stay "buttoned up" and face the swarm. Pure, legendary cinema.

Cult of Personality 2023 (https://boxd.it/jw0oo) #22 of 52 | Shia LaBeouf (https://letterboxd.com/actor/shia-labeouf/) Fury is good, but certainly not the greatest war film ever. The cinematography, acting, plot, and production value are all excellent. What really gets me is the out-of-place score and the editing. The music itself is fine, that much is true. However, it just does not fit in this type of film at all. None of the music sounds like it belongs in a 2014 WWII drama, but rather you might hear it in a mid-2000s Michael Bay action flick. Don’t get me wrong, it does work in some parts, but the majority of the time I found myself being pulled out by music that just doesn’t match the vibes of the current scene. The editing is decent in most of the film. There were really just a handful of spots that made me do a double-take and think, “did I miss something here?” Wardaddy magically switches positions between shots, the final battle goes from dusky-daylight to pitch-black-nighttime a bit suddenly. Apparently, quite a few scenes were removed from the final product as well, ones that (from the sound of it) would've greatly improved the plot. Mayhap the deleted scenes are to blame for the bad editing? Overall, there are for sure some strange filmmaking choices on display here. I almost wonder whether this isn’t another case of “the studio got too involved in David Ayer’s work”. It is a good one for sure, I do love the performances and the brutality of war is next-level shocking. #ReleaseTheAyerCut (but for Fury)
Fury
aside from the outstanding performance from shia, there’s nothing about fury that is particularly interesting. which is strange because i distinctly remember liking this more, but i’m having a hard time figuring out why...ah well, it’s a shame. that makes several series of duds from ayer in my book...not good.
Fury
