Blair Witch
It's always a blast to show other people Blair Witch, especially with them only knowing of the first film. Even after all of my viewings of this film, I can confidently say that this film truly is terrifying. Building interesting characters and ditching the same style of filmmaking as the original film makes this film stand out among many other horror films. The scares are genuine, making this film an absolute rush to watch. Seeing other people's reactions to the film is always fun as well, seeing the pure terror as they see what unfolds. Blair Witch is one of the best found footage horror films that I have ever seen, which is an absolute surprise, especially coming after such an iconic first film.
Blair Witch
We wanted something remotely scary to watch, and the general concensus was Blair Witch, which really wasn’t a bad choice. With every rewatch, I find myself enjoying this film more and more, really starting to appreciate what Wingard was doing. It’s not as scary as the first one, but creates likable characters and an atmosphere that stuns. It’s a fun film overall that does offer the perfect amount of paranoia and jump scares to leave us satisfied.
Blair Witch
While it may not be as terrifying this viewing, Blair Witch still manages to be one of the best found-footage films that I've seen. With a surprisingly haunting score and genuine scares, Blair Witch is still a great sequel to The Blair Witch Project, something I cannot say for Book of Shadows.
Blair Witch
When a studio announces that there is going to be a sequel to a movie, I usually groan, just like everyone else. Sequels seem to be something that Hollywood has decided is interesting, with many of them being absolutely horrible (watch Independence Day: Resurgence if you don't believe me). When I heard about this film, I heard about it when it was titled The Woods. A simple teaser trailer was released and I was hooked. It looked absolutely terrifying and it looked like it potentially could be a fantastic horror film. As the date grew closer to when I thought it may be released, I was surprised to hear no information about it. Then, while in Europe, I heard that there was a sequel to The Blair Witch Project. I scoffed, since it was just another unnecessary sequel. It wasn't until later that I found out The Woods was actually Blair Witch. My excitement seemed to grow, since the first teaser trailer made me extremely excited to see it. Finally, I've seen Blair Witch. I told myself that I was going to see it on opening day, but sadly I was unable to do that. Finally, I was able to find some time to take a friend to the movies and go see it. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't excited, since I got butterflies driving to the theater. This is a film that I was extremely excited to see, and it was nice to finally know that I was going to see it, especially since I was seeing it in an AMC theater. My excitement seemed to grow, even while I was watching the film. Blair Witch manages to do things that many horror films are unable to do; it was actually scary. There are so many found footage films that I have seen that just aren't scary. Other than Rec, Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project, and Grave Encounters, I can't say that there are many found footage films that are actually quality. Blair Witch is the epitome of what a found footage movie should be able to do, and shows that they are more than capable of being scary. One thing that really surprised me about this film was that it had a score. When I think of a found footage film, I never think of hearing a score, since it's actually recorded. So, I was really surprised to find out that there was a score released for this. What really surprised me is that I actually paid attention while watching the film and I heard the soundtrack, which made the film so much better. A score is something that can make or break a film, and this score made the film scarier. There are many scores that really don't do anything for films, and this one really is frightening. Found footage is something that has been done over and over again. I've seen many found footage horror films, and the vast majority of them aren't well done. There are surprises, but those are far and in between. It seems like the high of found footage is starting to end, but there are still so many coming out. It makes sense that Blair Witch is a found footage, since the first film is. It wasn't surprising to see that the footage was more modern, since the technology really has advanced since the original's release. The new technology really doesn't make a difference, though, since it pretty much becomes the same style of found footage as the original. A majority of the scares in this film happen to be jump scares. I really don't like jump scares, since they only rely on sound to make you scared, and that's not what horror is. Horror is supposed to creep under your skin and stay with you, making something really memorable. Luckily, the second half of Blair Witch utilizes the jump scares to it's advantage, and creates some truly terrifying scenes. The whole theater was jumping throughout the theater, but seemed to be paralyzed in their seats during the climax. That's when you know that a horror film has succeeded, when people stop talking and actually are frozen in their seats in fear. Adam Wingard has been a director that's been on my radar for a while, since I am a huge fan of his film You're Next. I was really excited to hear that he was the director of this, since he really does have a love for horror and seems to want to do justice to the genre. It's really interesting to have a director for found footage films, because you normally don't associate a director with the films, since it's mostly filmed by the cast members. I believe that Blair Witch does justice to the original film. It expands on the little mythology of the first film, and creates some new mythology that makes the franchise even more captivating. The film has a really similar tone to it, but still is able to feel like it is an individual film, instead of a recreation of the original. A sequel really should expand off of things in the original, which this film did, but it still maintained the fact that it is not the original. I really think that the film is just as good as the original, and that's something, because I really did love the original movie. I think that it was a good idea watching the original again before Blair Witch, since I would have forgotten many things and wouldn't have noticed some of the things in this film. Blair Witch stands among some of the best modern horror films. I had some doubts that this was actually going to be quality, but after the trailers and after actually seeing it, I am really happy to say that this is just as good as the original. I know that many people don't like Blair Witch, as a majority of people now don't, but I really do think that it's a terrifying film that does justice to the original. Give Blair Witch a change, and you may be pretty surprised. **Note: I think that, after watching this, this could spawn some sequels. The ending of the film gives some resolution, but still leaves some questions unanswered. I can see this having several sequels, with the mythology getting much more complicated than it is now. I hope that this doesn't happen, but it's something that I could see happening.**
