The Big Sleep

the plot is very difficult to follow at times, it comes together at the end but i’ll definitely have to rewatch it to put all the pieces together. even still, i enjoyed this a lot. the dialogue is good and i could watch lauren bacall for hours on end.

The Big Sleep

“What’s wrong with you?” “Nothing you can’t fix.” I’m a pretty smart guy. I’ve watched and read and had to decipher many confusing things in my life. But THE BIG SLEEP…I genuinely have no idea what went on besides the basic strokes of the plot. Eddie, Jonsey, Regan, Sternwood…all those names and more it felt like I was actually reading a complicated crime novel. That level of confusion is rare for me that I do have to give Hawks credit where it’s due for making my head spin. Also for creating a film that I am going to have to, and want to, go back and rewatch one day. Bogart and Becall as always, are stunning.

The Big Sleep

Film School Drop Outs Weekly Challenge (https://letterboxd.com/goghaliens/list/film-school-drop-outs-weekly-challenge-2019) Week 11: Actor - Humphrey Bogart I've been anticipating this week's challenge; don't think I've watched a film this quick, so far. Reasons for this: (a) my first Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall movie, and (b) NOIR. Let me just start by saying: Before Gyllenhaal started excessively blinking his eyes in Prisoners, Humphrey Bogart was there, constantly pulling on his own ear. It is initially brimming with charm (borrowed from its leads), energy and intrigue; promising a pleasant experience with its witty lines, and offering suprises with few scenes that make one question 'How'd they get that past the Hays Code?' The first half delivers, but the second, most of the time, fails to provide entertainment. The plot becomes too hard to follow — I wouldn't be surprised if this served as a huge inspiration for Inherent Vice. But here, that element makes the whole affair rather drab and difficult to keep oneself invested in. However, the scenes between Bacall and Bogart brought me joy. Their chemistry ugh!!! He's practically beaming with love. My favorite scenes are the police call, and this interaction: Her: Maybe I wanted to hold your hand. Him: Oh, that can be arranged. [extends his hand] Her: [hands him her glove] I'm sure there's much to be said about him calling every woman he meets 'angel' and proceeding to tell 'em what to do. Dunno know if it was supposed to be a commentary on this behaviour & gender or? Would have thought about it further had I understood majority of the plot. Also, I guess Bogart is cute😂 The lighting was nice, and I liked the costumes! Don't regret watching it; think it's the kind of film that gets better on a rewatch because you know what to expect, and when & where to focus.
