5 Centimeters per Second

So.. is it a sad ending? I was smiling in a first episode, and then confuse in a second episode, and crying in a third episode, what a roller coaster type of anime. I would named this Takaki and his lovers.

5 Centimeters per Second

"5 Centimeters per Second" directed by Makoto Shinkai is a 3-episode film following a relationship between Takaki and Akari over the course of about 14 years and how it fades in that time period. As someone currently making his way through Shinkai's work, I've been loving what I've seen so far (see my reviews for "Your Name (https://boxd.it/6s3Eph)", "Weathering with You (https://boxd.it/6uUiDv)", and "Suzume (https://boxd.it/6wBe1n)" for reference). This film, like those previously mentioned, all includes stunning animation and other worldly stories featuring great characters. This one is a bit different in that there are no other worldly or magical elements. This film is based in a realistic world, which does help sell the theme of this movie! The main crux of this film is the amazingly introspective script, written by Shinkai himself. It is perhaps the best script out of all his films (that I've seen so far). It's a haunting and beautiful display of the regret, pain and grief that can come with clinging onto the past too tightly. I truly wish this film was longer because I wanted to spend more time with these characters! I'm also honestly not crazy about the segmenting of the film into episodes, but that's a minor nitpick. Overall, it's a really decent flick! I just wanted a longer film with this exact story and these characters (which hey, that's a compliment in itself).

5 Centimeters per Second

I had bigger expectations from this but it fell a lot short of them. And there is a problem that I am seeing these anime movies which are under duration of 1 hour. They attempt to get viewers attached and feel the emotion but you have to give a proper setup for that. Of all Shinkai's works I have seen , this would be rockbottom of them. But as I have seen the future movies of him , I know he has the best work ever. But to me , this would always be a test drive of Shinkai. Although the best thing about this anime is it's cinematography. Like at a regular interval , you will always spot a beautiful moment. There are so many of those beautiful shots there. Loved them.
