Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher was perfection. Last week, I had read the book Foxcatcher by Mark Schultz. I had been extremely interested in the movie, so I thought to read the novel first. I was so glad I did. I appreciated many things in the movie that I would not have been able to understand, like the basics of what wrestling itself is. Without knowing what the book described, I would have been completely in the dark about what was going on. Throughout the film, many people gave extremely strong performances. Channing Tatum was able to portray Mark incredibly well, getting himself extremely into character. Mark Ruffalo was cast perfectly as Dave. I could not see anyone being able to portray him like Mark Ruffalo did. But the performance that deserves the most attention is that of Steve Carell. Carell played du Pont with ease. I had only seen him in his comedic roles, so I wasn't sure about him being du Pont until now. He was able to portray the socially awkward man with grace. Carell deserves so many awards for stepping out of his normal grounds and delivering a performance of a lifetime. Foxcatcher isn't for everyone, me included. I never thought I would enjoy a sports movie, let alone a movie involving wrestling. This story needs to be out again, showing people what wrestling is like, what the Olympics is like, and how strange John du Pont really was.

Foxcatcher

My only qualm with this movie is that, after watching some videos of the real John du Pont, Carell’s interpretation (or more so Miller’s) feels like an exaggerated version. But maybe that’s the point. What a psychotic, insecure, wannabe, little weirdo.
